Chapter Twenty

With Mel now as part of the family, Fronstead was more accepting of her help. We certainly needed it. With each day that passed, we became more and more aware that this was not going to be an easy fight. We were starting to set up the trenches and the barricades, and I was able to witness how effective they could be against the mindless golems.

The beasts, however, were still a problem, especially as they became more numerous each day.

The fact was, we just didn’t have enough people capable of dealing with the corrupted creatures. Cassie and I used our magic to blow them away, and Mel and Helga were capable enough to take on one or two creatures through sheer strength alone. Ulrik and Elrik could hold their ground in a pinch, and there were a few other villagers who had some skill in combat. However, dealing with one or two stray beasts was different from the onslaught that would happen with the solstice.

In prior years, especially as Fronstead’s population declined, they had simply hidden behind the city walls. Being on the defensive had minimized casualties, in no small part thanks to Giselle’s planning, but came at the cost of significant damage to the town itself. This year, however, we had chosen to take the battle out towards the Hinterlands, and while we had been hopeful at first, the larger area forced us to spread our resources thin.

In light of this, Giselle gathered us together to meet at the Silver Scales. Haldor and Alwyn represented the laborers, while Helga spoke for those willing to fight. Mel, Cassie, and I were there to listen and offer our side, as the people expected to lead the fight.

“We don’t have enough people to defend Fronstead from the outside... but we could still pull back and play defense,” Alwyn pointed out. “The trenches and barricades will still be there. Less people would die if we trapped the monsters in the city before killing.” Haldor nodded, tugging at his ruddy-gray beard.

“Everyone’s still feeling pretty hopeful about getting out there,” Helga pointed out, crossing her broad arms over her chest. “They’re seeing it as a sign of hope, that we’re defending our town rather than letting the town defend us.”

“That’s all well and good, but it won’t mean anything if they’re all dead,” Alwyn responded with a frown. Helga shrugged.

Giselle chimed in. “It’s also important to remember what happened to Fronstead before. People still died, and the rebuilding process was long and strenuous. If we let them come to the town, there may not be anything left worth saving.”

Alwyn and Haldor looked at each other, then nodded in unhappy agreement. Haldor grunted his response. “You’re right. People keep moving out. And it’s not like we’ve got the resources to keep rebuilding, especially after the dragon attack.”

Mel winced. Giselle caught sight of that and reached out to gently touch her arm, though the half-elf’s face remained solemn. “Let’s see what our defenders have to say,” Giselle prompted softly.
